New Family Search
« on: October 10, 2008, 08:20:16 AM »
I'm not a member of the LDS chruch, but have heard a lot about the new FamilySearch (nfs) web site that is being rolled out to church members. Can anyone tell me if and when nfs will be available to people like me? Thank you!

Dunno about when the full product will be available but the pilot site can be reached here.

new.FamilySearch.org is a temporary internet location for the new FamilyTree program under development by FamilySearch (FamilyTree is often called newFamilySearch).  When the program is completed it will be added to the www.FamilySearch.org web site and made available to the general public.  It is being used by members of the Church outside of Utah and Nevada while it is under development.  The original plan was for the rollout to take about one year.  That goal has not been met and there appears to be scaling problems that need to be solved before it is introduced to Chruch members in Utah and Nevada.  Some estimates now are  that it could be another year or more before it is ready for expanded release.

FamilyTree is a project that takes many of FamilySearch's databases and combines them all into one large database.  A folder is created for each individual and each record that refers to that individual is then filed into that folder.  These folders are then linked into pedigrees.  This will provide one place to go to find all the records about an individual that FamilySearch has.  At the present time this system includes the IGI, Ancestral File, PRF, and LDS Church Membership Records for deceased members.  So far just Church members outside of Utah and Idaho are using this system and working on combining duplicate records into the folders and linking them into pedigrees.

Future plans for this system will also allow including original documents from the new Record Search site into these folders by linking to original online documents such as Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, Parish Records, Immigration Records, Census Images, and other Vital Records index records and images.  The program is operated Wiki style where everyone works on the same system and the goal is for this to be a pedigree for the entire world. It is currently available in 8 languages and there are plans for it to be available in all major languages.

Actually that link is to the FamilySearch Record Search Pilot site.  Record Search Pilot is a new site where you can access the images being indexed in the FamilySearch Indexing Project.  Record Search is available now to the General Public in a Pilot version.  It already has about 500 Million names from original Vital Records that are available to search for free.  The indexing program is producing about 1 million new names per day and these are being added to the site on a monthly basis. The images come from the Family History Libraries microfilm collection.  The indexing project is a project to digitize the microfilm collection from the library and make those documents available online.  There is also another project in process (Historic Books) to digitize the book collection from the Family History Library and make those documents available online as well. You can access both Record Search and Historic Books  from the search menu at www.familysearch.org

newFamilySearch (FamilyTree) is a different project, see my other post.  Most of the names in newFamilySearch are available for the general public to search at the FamilySearch web site (using the Advances Search option in the search menu).  FamilyTree (newFamilySearch) is just a new way of organizing those names into folders and pedigrees.

Hi, to reply to your post about the new family search, it is for LDS members only at this time.  The family search that is available is still available to all.  The new family search should be available in the future to everyone.

Not true. I have access and I am not an LDS member. The same is true for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of other non-LDS members.

It is available to all LDS members AND to many others by invitation only. I believe there are many genealogy writers, software developers, and many genealogy society officers have full access.

Several genealogy programs are available or will be available that will exchange data with New Family Search. Those software developers can obtain access whether they are LDS members or not.
