Genealogy Software and Same-Sex Spousal Relationships
« on: August 03, 2009, 02:13:04 PM »
Hi:

I live in Canada.

I have been using genealogy software for more than 20 years, and have in the past -- although not recently -- tried many of the programs.

The program I currently use -- Ancestral Quest -- does not permit members of the same sex to be shown as spouses, and certainly has no provision for such a relationship to include children.  I have more than 50,000 individuals in my database, and in Canada, such relationships are legal and increasingly common.

In asking the following question, I am not particularly interested in a discussion about the nature of marriage, and viewpoints about non-traditional relationships.  My question is:  Is anyone aware if any of the existing genealogy software programs make provision for spousal relationships involving partners of the same sex?  And while I am at it, is there a software program that allows one to follow the maternal line, rather than the fraternal line?

Thanks

You have to create some custom tags, but it's easy to set up The Master Genealogist to do this. I have a civil union tag and a marriage tag for same sex partners.

Ok.  Thanks.  Still interested in any other software.
