Program for Mac
« on: October 14, 2008, 05:32:18 PM »
I am LDS and need a program that will track and help me with my genealogy. I especially need the ability to link to new FamilySearch. I also would like the ability to search the internet like Legacy or RootsMagic dose.

Any suggestions? I have looked at Reunion and it is a good program and will track what I enter it dose not have the ability to do internet searches or new FamilySearch links.

Currently I am using a intel Mac and have Legacy installed using Virtual Box but would like to go completely native with the Mac.

Thanks
Roger

I'm afraid I know next to nothing about genealogy software for the Mac. There is a list on Cyndi's List that may help you track down your options.

I'm not aware of any software for the Macintosh that will do what you're wanting it to - ie work with the New Family Search, and search the internet from within the software that you're using.

Reunion does support the LDS Ordinances, but there has been no indication so far from Leister Productions that they're working on making Reunion work with New Family Search.

I keep a close eye on all the Macintosh genealogy programs. However, I agree with the previous poster: nobody has yet announced any such plans for a Macintosh program.

You should check out FamilyInsight.  It is an update to PAFInsight.  They now have a Macintosh Version. It sync's with newFamilySearch and will work directly from a GEDCOM file.

You are right as I have not found any Mac programs that dose
what I want. I am in the process of trying FamilyInsight.

It would appear that there should be a way to have an api between FamilyInsight and a program like Reunion. Maybe a good business opportunity for someone.

thanks for your input

GRAMPS is available for MAC-OS. I use GRAMPS on Linux, as do most genealogists on Linux systems, but there is also a port for MAC-OS at http://tinyurl.com/73c46g along with some other genealogy software. I have previously used several Windows-based programs and preferred GRAMPS to the point that I installed the Windows version on my Windows box (when I had one). I switched 100% to Ubuntu Linux a few months ago. GRAMPS is a very powerful, standards based genealogy program with the ability to add numerous gramplets - little programettes that perform specific, unique tasks. Most gramplets are submitted by users. You can read about GRAMPS at: http://www.gramps-project.org

My best suggestion for a Mac program is - Get the "Bootcamp" or similar program that makes your Mac think it's a PC;  at that point, download a free version of Legacy to see how it runs.  IF things work out fine on the PC part of your Mac, then you can explore other programs like Family Tree Maker, or RootsMagic, etc.   Reunion is quite expensive and not very flexible.   However, that said, it's better than nothing.   GRAMPS is new to me - I'll also try that out too!
