These images are among the oldest known photographs of enslaved people in America. Tamara Lanier’s fight to gain control of them shows there is no clear system in place to repatriate remains of captive Africans or objects associated with them. I should point out that the photographs entitled, "FIVE GENERATIONS OF AN ENSLAVED AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILY" and dated 1862 was taken after Beaufort was occupied by the Union. That occurred in November of 1861 in the Battle of Port Royal Sound, which was the largest amphibious operation of the U.S. military until Normandy. The Union occupied the corridor from Beaufort to Hilton Head Island for the rest of the war, and was a major staging area for the Atlantic blockade. The Battle of Port Royal sound is probably not better known because it involves such overwhelming force that the Confederates only put up token resistance before retreating. Unfortunately, Civil War battles tend to be "rated" in terms of casualties and this decisive Union victory had few -- on either side.
